Major Club Trophies

Eddie Illingworth Trophy This Perpetual Trophy was struck to recognize the Club’s Most Valuable Player. After playing baseball as a Pitcher & Shortstop at Preston Technical School, Eddie’s first seasons were played in the 2's at Westgarth in the early 1950’s. Following successful Claxton Shield campaigns representing Victoria in 1960, 61, 62, 63 & 65, Eddie returned to his roots at W.B.C in the 1975 season & started a remarkable run of club success playing in a Premiership in his first season back. Eddie Illingworth is a 5 – time Westgarth Baseball Club Premiership Player in the 1’s, a two time 1st nine Batting Trophy winner and one of only 4 W.B.C. players to have polled Association MVP votes in the 1sts over 3 decades. In 2002 Eddie was named in the V.B.A. “Team of the Century” to match his “all Australian” selection of 1962. Australia to feature in Little League

Australia will have a team in the Little League World Series for the first time in 2013, exposing some of the country's best young baseballers to a television viewing audience of 40 million people. Previously the best local team had to win through the Asia-Pacific region to qualify for the annual tournament held in the United States - a task that had thus far proved beyond an outfit from Australia. But that all changes next year with the Australian national champion granted automatic entry into youth baseball's biggest international tournament. Now the fourth-largest country in the world in terms of little league participation, Australia will join Canada, Mexico and Japan as nations with automatic entry to the competition for 12- and 13-year-olds. The US gets eight spots for the 16-team competition, which has showcased future greats of the game including the Mets' All Star Jason Bay (National League rookie of the year in 2004) and Jason Varitek (three-time MLB all-star and ... Westgarth and Forest Hill preview a potential finals match up

Westgarth BC Mark Le Grew, Monday, 9 July 2012 With blue skies above, Round 11 of the MWBL season was played for A grade and B grade only, with results showing that the field is wide open come finals time. B Grade battle for top spot at Merri Park On a cool but sunny Saturday afternoon, Merri Park, Northcote, hosted the top-of-the-table clash between Westgarth and Forest Hill in Melbourne Winter Baseball League's B Grade competition. In a tight, closely-fought contest, the result came down to the last innings, with Westgarth prevailing, 6-4. Andrew Reeves took the ball for the hosts, with Forest Hill sending Daniel Beattie to the mound. After an uneventful first innings, the visitors were able to take a 2-0 lead over the first-placed Westgarth in the second. A lead-off single to Ewan John was followed by a double to Michael Van Der Meer, leaving runners on second and third base with no-one out. Catcher Simon Campbell was able to score John via an in-field ... More

Following our famous W in MLB

A short article this week from our roving correspondent in the US following the 'W'' in MLB. The All-Star break is behind us, and in Tuesday night's 83rd MLB All-Star Game at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri;  Washington Nationals “w " Rookie Bryce Harper got to put on a colourful show……….. who would be game enough to wear cleats that colour ? Harper would !!!  More important , National League All-Star Stephen Strasburg #37 of the Washington Nationals “w " pitched a fourth inning scoreless frame. The second half of the 2012 MLB season will soon begin. That, of course, means playoff races will become the singular focus. With the expanded wild-card format, we have a healthy number of teams that have realistic designs on the postseason. In fact, right now 23 teams -- 23 out of 30 -- are in or within five games of playoff position. In other words, it's going to be a hotly contested stretch drive. Following the w though, it’s worth remembering that no major ... More

Bartlett Blast delivers walk off glory

Westgarth 3rds Stage Remarkable Baseball Win Westgarth Baseball Club has had many wins in its proud 67 year history but few could have been more remarkable than the victory achieved by the 3rds team against Monash University on Saturday. On a bitterly cold afternoon at Merri Park in Northcote the Wesgarth team took to the plate for one last time trying to come back from a 14-9 deficit.  The young Monash southpaw pitcher who had started the game and deserved the victory quickly retired the lead-off batter.  Clean-up hitter Gary McKeown then briefly delayed the inevitable with a double to right field.  Marcus Garafillis capped a 3-hit game by singling to centre field and scoring McKeown.  That cut the deficit to 4 but the game looked all but over when the next hitter popped out to 2nd base in the fading light.  Westgarth were down to their last out and Monash were only one out away from securing the win. Rob Macleod had other ideas and stepped up and launched a huge bomb into ... More

Heritage Game Poem – By Ron Steiner (MUBC)

First things first, our thanks to Kingy, the club and to Sid For making another great day for us to declare and to bid For our places in UMBC immortality, as legends of the game To be playing once more for the chance to tackle Westgarth, to undo years of shame. . Its always so wonderful to struggle into the shrinking uniform and then around the ground Our once strong arms now so weak, our hamstrings tight and our tummies so round But nothing shines prouder or broader than the smiles that we bring Still beaming despite that ungainly third strike swing. . The odd error we make, the odd fly ball we miss More than compensated by catching up with dear mates ... it’s the essence of our heritage, it is sheer bliss. So thanks Kingy, thanks Sid and thanks to all concerned It is such a joy and such a pleasure to see everyone notwithstanding another year turned. . A further year that has seen wider girths, more grey and arms needing ice and dencorub And the joy of seeing ... More
